Arabic Poetry: ‘You have been bitten a lot’ – “لُدِغتَ كَثِيرًا”

O my friend, leave aside what distresses you.

And take the counsel of one who reminded you with guidance.

If you are attentive to advice,

Then your Lord will make the path of guidance easy for you.

So beware of plunging into temptation or discord,

And be like the camel when it kneels — calm and patient.

Beware of a speck that might harm your eye,

And be like one who rubs it away when he sees it.

Do not lean toward the arrogant,

For if you show weakness, he will belittle you.

So protect yourself today from humiliation,

For the humiliated one attains no dignity.

Keep company with a truthful man who, when he sees you,

Finds desire for good in you and enlightens your path.

Do not be one whose inner self among people

Contradicts the nature of your outward appearance.

Befriend a sincere person who pleases your heart,

For in his clarity, he will enlighten your sight.

And if a calamity befalls you and constrains you,

He will aid you after urging you to patience.

Leave aside those who seek benefit from you,

For when their gain ends, they leave you in regret.

They seek you only for profit, whatever it may be,

And care not when they lose you.

They draw from you as they wish,

Never restraining themselves nor sparing you.

They see you broken yet rejoice,

Sipping tea over your brokenness.

How many distant ones you have brought close,

Out of kindness — yet how many brothers denied you.

How many wise ones you turned away from,

Turning your back, though his company could have honored you.

How many companions deceived you,

While you ignored the one who warned you.

You trusted him without discernment,

And he made you weep after causing your fall.

How many vile ones you softened yourself toward,

Humbled yourself before him — yet he despised you.

You thought purity was his way,

But your expectation failed when he betrayed you.

If you sought goodness, he turned his back,

And mocked your effort from afar.

How many friends you confided in,

Yet when he left, he mocked and shamed you.

You’ve been bitten many times, yet you never learn,

And among people, your image is defaced.

Time passes, and you still do not take heed,

Though many trials have carried lessons for you.

You sleep and wake in heedlessness,

And have loosened your belt of restraint.

You sin in secret, feeling safe,

Thinking the Lord of creation does not see you.

You act arrogantly and play — yet you,

Are in utmost need of your Creator.

Still you persist in heedlessness,

And such behavior is what delayed your success.

You abandoned the Noble Book which,

Guided you — how greatly you have forsaken it!

O naive one, what has happened to you?

Has the world so intoxicated you?

Do you not see the afflictions within it?

Has no calamity yet shaken your awareness?

For life is a lesson for us,

Whose consequences are revealed in struggle.

Be humble before your Lord — for He,

When you show humility — He elevates you.

Beware of arrogance — you were just a drop,

Created — how insignificant you are!

Then you became a clot,

And after formation, He determined your fate.

And He fashioned you — glory be to Him —

In the most beautiful form as He willed.

You live a life until its appointed end,

And when you die, He will bury you.

He is the Creator, the Maker, the All-Powerful,

If He wills, after decay, He will resurrect you.

No state lasts for those who possess it,

For joy today may turn to sorrow tomorrow.

Indeed, eternity belongs to the Lord of creation,

And mortality is our shared destiny.

Awaken, hasten, and leave heedlessness,

For how worthy you are of doing so!

I have advised you, my friend — do not take it lightly,

For he who warns you today has done his duty.

If you repent, rejoice in success;

But if you refuse — how great your loss before God!
